Take charge of summertime nuisance pests

By Matt Giese, M.S., technical services manager for Syngenta

When it comes to your customers' lawns, nuisance pests are unwelcome visitors. In the hot summer months, a wide variety of pests appear, from house crickets to silverfish. Each pest comes with its own way of intruding on homeowners’ lawns and indoor living spaces. Applying an granular insect bait such as Advion® insect granule can be an excellent way to keep these pests at bay.

While some pests like earwigs do not pose a threat to humans, they have an unsightly appearance and can be a nuisance in homes. Other pests like house crickets can damage carpets if they make their way inside by pulling fibers during feeding. Silverfish, commonly found outside and in bathtubs, can contaminate food and damage paper items such as books.

You can educate your customers to make simple adjustments to reduce the occurrence of these pests around their homes:

  • Mow tall grass and weed flower beds around homes
  • Ensure entry points like doors, windows and vents are properly sealed
  • Keep heavily mulched areas 3-4 ft. away from the foundation

Protect your customers' homes with Advion insect granule

Unlike many common granules that are contact insecticides, Advion insect granule is a bait product. It is attractive to and controls a broad spectrum of insects including house crickets, field crickets, cockroaches, silverfish, mole crickets and nuisance ants, especially as a perimeter treatment in mulched areas.

As an additional benefit, the active ingredient in Advion insect granule, indoxacarb, is bioactivated by the internal enzymes in target organisms. Its mode of action targets the insect’s nervous system through specific enzyme-mediated metabolism, which allows the active ingredient to effectively differentiate between target and non-target organisms.

Target organisms
Upon entering an insect, indoxacarb is converted into a new molecule with insecticidal properties. This process is activated specifically by the insect’s own enzymes. Source: Syngenta.

Non-target organisms
The bio-activation process of Advion insect granule is not as efficient within most non-target organisms, so they are less likely to be affected by the product. Source: Syngenta.

Application recommendations

You can depend on Advion insect granule to control nuisance pests in turf that may potentially enter your customers’ homes. Advion insect granule can be applied outdoors as a broadcast, perimeter or boundary treatment in residential and commercial landscaped areas.

  • Outdoor broadcast application - Apply at the rate of 50-200 lb./A. Repeat application after seven days if necessary.
  • Perimeter application - In urban situations, apply Advion insect granule at a rate of 1 lb./1,000 ft.2 to the ground area in a band up to 10 ft. wide around and adjacent to the structure.
  • Boundary application - Apply to soil areas, fence lines, ornamental gardens, pavement crevices, planter areas, vegetation areas and mulch areas.
  • Ideal use patterns - Provides flexibility for residential or commercial properties.

When used indoors, Advion insect granule can be applied to attractive harborage areas for many perimeter pests including in attics, basements and crawl spaces, as long as they are inaccessible to children and pets.
