Beyond their irritating bites, mosquitoes pose significant health risks as they are carriers of diseases like malaria, dengue fever, Zika and Chikungunya virus. To effectively control mosquito populations and help minimize their impact on human health, it’s crucial to understand mosquito life cycles, species and behaviors. This will ultimately help you implement effective mosquito applications for season-long control. The life cycle of a mosquito is as follows: - Mosquitoes start as tiny eggs laid in and around bodies of water
- The eggs hatch into larvae (aka wigglers), which live in water and feed on microscopic organisms
- After a few weeks, the larvae transform into pupae
- Soon after, they emerge as full-grown adult mosquitoes, ready to buzz around and ruin your summer BBQs
Did you know that there are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes? Fortunately, not all mosquito species bother humans. Some have a particular fondness for birds, while others prefer larger mammals. Our predominant backyard mosquito target is the Aedes mosquito. Aedes were originally found in tropical and subtropical areas, but now live throughout the world. This container-breeding mosquito relies on standing water surfaces for its egg-laying strategy. Using an insect growth regulator (IGR) product, such as Archer® IGR with pyriproxyfen, can help you sustain long-term seasonal control. Mosquitoes have seasons — just like your favorite TV show. Understanding the peak times for mosquito activity in your area is crucial for effective control. For some regions, the hot and humid summer months bring out the worst of them, while for others, it could be the rainy season. By focusing your control efforts seasonally, you’ll have a better chance of keeping mosquito populations in check and helping your customers enjoy their outdoor activities in peace. Consider the following best practices for mosquito treatment: - Systematically inspect the property
- Reduce breeding habitats such as birdbaths and clogged gutters
- Look beyond the treatment zone to ensure a thorough treatment can be made
- Have customers trim foliage to reduce mosquito hiding spots
- Note wind speed and direction as well as potential rainfall
- Wear all appropriate personal protective equipment
- Have spray equipment properly calibrated and maintained
Consistency is key, so establish a regular schedule for your mosquito control efforts.
